SAINT-GERMAIN

A SATURDAY IN SAINT-GERMAIN

No itinerary to complete. Just a few places worth knowing.

There are parts of Paris that reveal themselves slowly, and Saint-Germain is one of them.

Saturday here is best left relatively unplanned: coffee somewhere familiar, a walk without much purpose, something from the market, lunch that runs a little later than expected and perhaps a gallery before heading home.

This is how we would spend it.

09:30 — COFFEE FIRST

Begin quietly.

Start around Saint-Germain-des-Prés before the neighbourhood becomes busy. Coffee, something small for breakfast, and nowhere particularly urgent to be.

From here, walk towards Rue de Buci and through the smaller streets around the Marché Saint-Germain.

11:00 — THE MARKET

Marché Saint-Germain

A covered market in the heart of the 6th and one of those places that makes the neighbourhood feel residential rather than simply beautiful.

Flowers, fruit, cheese, something for dinner — or simply a reason to wander through.

12:30 — LUNCH

Choose somewhere you would happily stay for two hours.

The best Saturday lunches in Saint-Germain aren’t necessarily the newest addresses. A terrace, a proper table, good people-watching and no reason to rush are usually enough.

15:00 — RUE DE SEINE

For galleries and getting slightly distracted.

Walk north through the streets between Saint-Germain and the Seine.

Rue de Seine and the surrounding streets remain one of our favourite parts of the neighbourhood for galleries, antiques and interiors.

17:00 — LUXEMBOURG

End the afternoon around the Jardin du Luxembourg.

Not because it’s something that needs to be seen, but because it’s one of those places that becomes particularly valuable when you’re actually living nearby.

19:00 — HOME, FOR A WHILE

One of the pleasures of staying in Saint-Germain is being able to leave Paris outside for a few hours — before deciding whether to go back out again.
